According to the evwind.es website, since the Russian-Ukrainian war, Ukraine has been struggling to cope with a major energy crisis due to the destruction of energy infrastructure. Ukraine's state-owned coal plants, which needed to be upgraded, were further damaged beyond repair. To reduce its dependence on Russian energy, Ukraine has set a goal of closing all state-owned coal plants by 2035.

The fundamental solution lies in a rapid transition to renewable energy, increased investment in solar, wind and heat pump technologies, and cost-effective and future-proof solutions for consumers. Ukraine has made considerable progress in this regard, with more onshore wind capacity added than the UK last year. Installing small solar panels and implementing grid-scale projects can address the immediate energy supply gap and lay the groundwork for a future decentralized renewable energy power system.

Ukraine has a number of high-profile success stories demonstrating the benefits of renewable energy systems. For example, when the heating system at Horenka Village Hospital was damaged, NGOs installed solar panels and heat pumps that provided 60 percent of the electricity and reduced heating costs by 80 percent. Similarly, a clinic in the Zhytomyr region installed solar panels to power ventilators in the intensive care unit, ensuring uninterrupted power supply during intensive care.

In parallel with the transition to renewable energy, Ukraine must prioritize energy efficiency measures. Energy-intensive economies consume finite resources, especially in times of war. Improving energy efficiency in all sectors should be a key focus during reconstruction. The transition from coal requires a well-designed national energy and climate plan that embraces a just approach to the transition. Consultations with local authorities, civil society organizations and experts are necessary to develop a detailed decarbonization plan in line with EU sustainability principles and climate goals.

Ukraine's energy transition not only contributes to economic recovery and energy security, but also attracts investors interested in green energy opportunities. By cooperating with other European countries that are phasing out coal, Ukraine hopes to become a green energy source, providing clean energy and sustainable technologies to the EU and other countries.
