What is the OCPP protocol?
Nov 29, 2023
The full name of OCPP is "Open Charge Point Protocol", which literally translates to Open Charge Point Protocol. It is a communication protocol used between electric vehicle charging equipment and charging station management systems. The OCPP was developed by EV charging networks to enable interoperability of charging infrastructure. The protocol is open-source, meaning that any organization or individual can use this standard to develop and deploy EV charging infrastructure.

The OCPP defines the way in which information is exchanged between EV charging stations (charging points) and the central management system. This includes information on the status of the charging station, instructions to start or stop charging, authentication of users, as well as remote monitoring and maintenance. The goal of the standard is to make the charging network more open and flexible, avoiding vendor lock-in.
With the growth of the electric vehicle market, OCPP has been widely adopted worldwide. It enables seamless integration of various charging infrastructures and operators, thus contributing to the establishment of more user-friendly and easy-to-maintain charging networks.
The advantages of OCPP are:
1. Openness: As an open standard, any organization or enterprise can use the OCPP protocol to develop its own charging pile and management software without paying royalties.
2. Flexibility: The OCPP gives charging station operators the freedom to choose their charging infrastructure equipment, while also facilitating the integration of new technologies or services to meet changing market demands.
3. Easy to extend: The protocol version is constantly updated as new features and improvements are added. Such as from OCPP 1.5 to OCPP 1.6 to OCPP 2.0.1, and is committed to backward compatibility.
4. Interoperability: OCPP facilitates interoperability between charging stations and management systems from different vendors, which is essential for creating a unified and convenient user experience. Users can seamlessly charge their own EVs in different charging networks.
The latest version of the current OCPP is OCPP 2.0.1, which brings more features and improvements, including better security, support for more advanced charging strategies, energy management, and integration with other services such as payments and smart grid interactions.
In short, OCPP is an international standard protocol for connecting EV charging stations and management networks, underpinning a robust, scalable, maintainable, and future-sustainable EV charging infrastructure infrastructure.
