According to foreign media reports, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on August 1 that it has begun an investigation into the steering control and power steering runaway failures of 280,000 new Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.

NHTSA began an initial assessment of the vehicles in question after receiving 12 complaints from owners of the 2023 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. An initial assessment is the first step in a formal investigation to determine whether the issue poses an unreasonable security risk. NHTSA needs to upgrade the initial assessment to engineering analysis before it can request a recall.

In May, one Model 3 owner reported: "The steering wheel of the car seemed to get stuck, the vehicle slid off the road, and finally hit a tree." ”

In June, an owner from Alpharetta, Georgia, also reported that his Model Y had only been driven for two weeks and that one day after coming out of a shopping mall, "the steering wheel suddenly failed to turn, and the vehicle rushed into the traffic on the road, not knowing how to get across the road from the mall." Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Another complaint occurred in April, when the owner said that after his new Model Y, which was less than 30 days old, the steering wheel suddenly "violently turned to the right" and made a rattle noise, followed by a warning on the vehicle screen that "steering assist failed" and displayed an error code.

The owner said the vehicle's steering power was then disabled. The owner also told NHTSA: "Tesla also postponed my repair date from May 2 to May 25 due to the lack of parts." Tesla also confirmed to me that this is an issue that has occurred many times in recent times and may require a complete replacement of the steering gear. ”

Another owner from Honolulu said that just a week after buying a Tesla car, the steering wheel of the vehicle began to lock randomly. The owner said this happened six times before going to the Tesla service center. "The current vehicle is still in the Tesla service center, waiting for the new steering gear."
