Texas A&M University Transportation Services has enhanced its campus amenities by installing four cutting-edge electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Lot 47, marking a significant step forward for the university's sustainable transport infrastructure. These stations, situated at the parking lot's northeast corner near Polo Road Garage, are designed to accommodate two vehicles simultaneously, elevating the convenience for EV owners.

A first of their kind on campus, these Level 3 charging stations herald a new era of charging efficiency, boasting significantly reduced charging times. "Joining a select group of higher education institutions, we're excited to offer public Level 3 electric vehicle charging capabilities on our campus," said Debbie Lollar, interim associate vice president of Transportation Services. "This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainability and serving our community, including students, faculty, staff, visitors, and fans who drive electric vehicles to Texas A&M University."

Compared to the campus's 31 existing Level 2 EV chargers and an additional six at the RELLIS Campus, the new Level 3 stations represent a technological leap. Byron Prestridge, sustainable transportation manager at Transportation Services, explained the key distinction lies in the stations' ability to convert AC (alternating current) to DC (direct current) power, facilitating rapid power delivery to EVs. This means a Level 3 charger can charge vehicles in 30 minutes to levels that would take several hours at a Level 2 station.

The decision to install these advanced chargers stems from a growing demand for more EV charging options on campus, a need highlighted by the 23,800 charging sessions recorded across existing stations till the end of March. "The introduction of DC fast chargers is a game-changer, showcasing an emerging technology not widely available in local areas," Prestridge noted.

The installation was made possible through a donation from alumnus H.W. (Bill) Clark '74, in honor of Hoyt C. Clark. "We are immensely thankful to Mr. Clark for his generosity. His support was pivotal in bringing these chargers to our campus and demonstrates our collective commitment to environmental stewardship," Lollar expressed.

Supplied by EVGateway, the new stations represent the pinnacle of charging speed available at Texas A&M, delivering up to 120 kilowatt-hours from each of the four units. With innovative load management controls, these stations can efficiently serve two vehicles per tower, adjusting to each vehicle's charging needs.

EvGateway President Reddy Marri shared his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "We're honored to collaborate with Texas A&M in launching these state-of-the-art DC fast charging stations. This venture significantly contributes to our vision for a greener future by enhancing the EV charging infrastructure and encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles. These chargers are more than just a power source; they are a step towards innovation in e-mobility and making EV charging more convenient and accessible."

The eight designated charging spots are available for public use, requiring no parking permit but limited to active charging with a maximum duration of 90 minutes to ensure availability. Users are prompted to provide a contact number, receiving a text notification once charging completes or the time limit is reached, with a 15-minute grace period to relocate their vehicles. Failure to comply results in an inactivity fee and potential ticketing, underscoring the importance of respecting the shared charging resource.
