How To Distinguish Between Fast Ev Charging And Slow Ev Charging?
Jul 29, 2024
There are always customers asking me in private messages: how to distinguish between "fast ev charging" and "slow ev charging"? Some friends say: "The charging interface has nine holes is fast charging", some friends say: "The charging power is fast charging", and some friends say: "The one installed in the public station is fast charging", so, is it really what everyone says? Today I will talk to you about those things about "fast and slow charging".
01
Interface: 7 holes VS 9 holes
Charging, that is, the process of charging electricity from the power grid into a power battery. However, since the electricity in the grid is alternating current, the power battery uses direct current. Therefore, our new energy vehicles generally have two charging interfaces, one is seven holes and the other is nine holes, which correspond to AC charging and DC charging respectively.
02
AC charging pile≠ "slow charging"
Generally speaking, the higher the charging power, the larger the volume of the on-board charger/power module, the smaller the interior space, and the higher the vehicle cost. Therefore, car companies generally choose 7kW on-board chargers, and the power demand for AC charging piles does not need to be too large, and AC charging piles have naturally become synonymous with "slow charging", but this does not mean that the two can be directly equated.
For example, our company once customized a 22kW AC charging pile for a well-known car company, and the lowest power of our DC charging pile is only 7kW. It can be seen that AC and DC charging piles cannot be used as the basis for distinguishing "fast and slow charging", and they must be distinguished according to their actual charging interface and the power of the charging pile.

Public stations
Of course, there will be friends who say: "What is installed in public stations is fast charging", but in fact, this is not necessarily the case. Indeed, in recent years, with everyone's pursuit of charging speed, new public stations have been transforming to high-power DC piles, and AC charging piles have gradually faded out of sight, which has caused the phenomenon of "fast charging" in most public stations.
So, there is no low-power charging pile in public stations?
(1) For charging scenarios such as factories, parks, and residences, car owners generally stay for a long time, and for the sake of capacitance saving, the goal is generally to be fully charged within 8 hours, so the power of the charging pile is generally between 7kW and 60kW;
(2) For charging scenarios such as supermarkets, scenic spots, and public service organizations, most people will stay for about 2 hours, so it will be more suitable to equip charging piles with 120-180kW;
(3) In charging scenarios such as transportation hubs and highway trunk lines, the faster the charging speed, the better, so 360kW/480kW high-power charging piles are a better choice.
This is not without basis, but a theory summarized by Newcom Charging based on its own practice in the field of charging operation for many years.
